how does this work?

Answer:
Hi Tom,
This volume control would be spliced in-line between the amp and the speaker to lower the volume the speaker is receiving.

Hi Tom:
The Volume Control actually attenuates the volume level. After you have spliced it in you set your output on the Receiver/Amplifier to acceptable listening levels with the volume control turned to full open (the knob turned clockwise all the way to stop). Then as you turn the knob to the left, counter clockwise the power is diverted to the internal transformers which lowers the output or volume levels. This is a passive device with no gain. Technically you are only turning the volume down not increasing it. Note, there is also an Impedance matching switch which features three settings 1/2x, 4x and 8x. An example of using this switch would be connecting two pair of 8 ohm speakers wiried in parallel (positive to positive and negatives to negatives), You would set the switch to 1/2x. When wiring the two 8 ohm pairs in parallel the impedance is cut in half from 8 ohm to 4 ohm. This puts a greater demand on the Amplifier having to double its output. With the Impedance matching Volume control the Impedance is restored to the more acceptable 8 ohm connection. This is more important when using a basic 2 channel amplifier like our AMP120 which works best with an 8 ohm connection.

My set up is a Denon 140w 2 channel receiver connected to a SIMMA 6 Speaker selector with indiv volume controls for each pair of speakers running 6 pairs of outdoor speakers which I think are all 8 ohms - Denon will go down to 4 ohms I think but set to 8 Ohms - The one pair of Deck speakers- the left speaker needs a seperate volume control so I can adjust the left speaker volume only up or down down and keep the right speaker at its normal volume to be controlled by the speaker selector. So I want to install another volume control in between the spaker selector to the indiv speaker - What model do you suggest?

Hi Robert:
I would suggest the OVC-305R and just connect the left or right input/output. This volume control does not have any impedance matching capability which is already being handled by the Volume Control in the Simma? It will not change the 8 ohm setting of the single speaker you are wanting to control.
