On sale while supplies last. Part of our Pro Series, the ICE540 ceiling speaker pair is an excellent value. This in-ceiling speaker can be used for whole house audio in bedrooms, hallways, kitchens and bathrooms as well as for audio in home theaters applications. Features of the ICE540 include a 5¼” polypropylene woofer for smooth low frequency and a ¾” silk dome tweeter for crisp, clear highs. To distribute the range of audio frequencies most effectively, this speaker uses an advanced crossover network so you'll get the best sounding speaker possible for your investment.
Do I need special cable for in-ceiling speakers?
Wiring is not included with in-ceiling speakers so you will have to purchase some. While wiring requirements will depend on your local building codes, OSD Audio offers CL3/FT4 cable that is UL (fire) rated for all residential and most commercial in-wall and in-ceiling applications. (The exception is you cannot run this cable in heating or cooling ducts in commercial applications.) This cable includes a heavy-duty outer jacket approved for in-wall/in-ceiling installation. The high quality plastic jacket is also very flexible so it's easy to run the wires inside the wall.
Choosing the Right Size In-ceiling Speaker
The ICE540 Ceiling Speaker has a 5¼-inch cone woofer. The woofer refers to loudspeaker driver that produces low frequencies, which is very important with today’s complex digital soundtracks. A speaker’s ability to produce low frequencies depends on different factors the bigger the woofer, the better it will be at producing low frequencies. That’s physics! The ICE540 in-ceiling is obviously a smaller speaker than our 6½ or 8-inch models. If heavy bass is very important to you, you may want to think about a bigger size cone.
To Test the Sound Quality of In-ceiling Speakers
A lot of customers like to test the sound quality of their new OSD Audio in-ceiling speakers before they install them. Keep in mind, however, that these flush-mount speakers are designed to be used in the wall or ceiling. Uninstalled in-wall/in-ceiling speakers will sound weak and tinny because without the proper enclosure (in this case your house wall) the speaker can’t produce the sound pressure level it needs. If you want to try them out, we recommend mounting the in-ceiling speakers into a box of about 3 cubic ft. or larger; or simply mount them in the ceiling and then listen. This will give you an accurate measure of the sound quality.
Benefits of Butyl Rubber Surround
Surrounding the speaker cone, Butyl Rubber Surround is a tough, moisture-resistant rubber that helps reflect energy and provides excellent sound damping characteristics. Most professional agree that Butyl Rubber Surround is a step up from typical form surrounds and benefits include superior durability. Butyl Rubber gives the speaker more excursion capability featuring a deeper bass with a wider frequency response, and its shelf life is closer to 25 years compared to the foam at 12 to 15 years.
For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.
