Do These Speakers Require a Back Box?
Back boxes are not required because in-wall speakers use an infinite baffle design. This allows the speakers to work in various size spaces, like inside a wall. OSD Audio Speakers can adapt to a broad range of enclosure sizes and can be installed with or without an enclosure (with infinite baffle, the wall cavity becomes the enclosure). There is a tradeoff, however. Without a back box, sound may bleed to another room. This may or may not be issue but if you decide to build an enclosure, it needs to be at least 5 to 6 inches to accommodate the depth of the speaker. Also, it's not a bad idea to ad fiberfill inside the cavity, which can be purchased at any hardware store.
Contour Switches
The contour switches will let you tailor frequency response to your room arrangement. You won't find yourself wishing for more or less treble, midrange or bass output from one speaker just because you don't happen to sit right between them.
For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.

It appears the dog ears only tighten on sides versus say up and down which would help? So the speaker would not be stable in the wall with only being held on one side. By Customer Service - Q&A on May 3, 2012Answer:Unfortunately the dog ears only fold out to the sides and are not adjustable to the bottom or top. I would recommend cutting at least one notch in your stud (probably for the middle dog ear). That would give you four tie downs which would be ample to hold the speaker in place.

The New Construction Wall Bracket that we stock is recommended for most of our 6.5" 2 way in-wall speakers except the IW690 because the speaker is a 1/2 inch or so shorter than the others. But like all of our In-Ceiling and in-Wall speakers they feature Retro mounting brackets so they can be installed with out the need for a new Construction Bracket. The IW690 features six dog ear mounting posts which provides a very sturdy install.

The IW690 are an excellent choice for front left and right when combined with our OSD550LCR speaker (use for center channel). In theory the right, left and center speaker should have the same tweeter and cone material for the woofers so to gurantee proper timbre match for the front stage. It is not critical to match your surround channels to the front stage. There are a number of choices for your rear channel including the IW690 in-Wall or ICE670LCR in-ceiling. Your choices may have to do more with space available to mount the speakers and run the speaker wire.

Great power, but...

I bought a set of these for my front speakers in a home
theater setup. For anyone that might be considering these or any of
the others from OSD here are my opinions after installing them.
(Note: I installed 6 rooms of whole house audio using a variety of
OSD speaker models, and I have been extremely happy with them). As
far as the IW690 speakers I will say this: They can handle a
ridiculous amount of power for their size. You will be able to
reproduce the sound and intensity of an aircraft carrier flight
deck if that is what you are into. My only knock would be that the
the bass presence is a little weak. If you are buying front
speakers for a home theater, consider a model with an 8 inch
woofer, even if that means dropping down to a less expensive model
to stay in your budget. If I had it to do over again, I would have
bought the IW840 instead. I have three sets of ICE840's in other
rooms, and they have a much warmer sound (and can handle plenty of
power), which I think would result in a more enjoyable experience
for 99% of TV/Movie watching. Overall I'm very happy with my set
up, which includes the PS10 subwoofer (which more than makes up for
the low-end response of these speakers).

I used the pair as surround/surround back at a little
above ear height when sitting. Installation was a breeze. The
finish is seamless. The sound is impressive - rich, clear with
enough bass. The room is medium sized. I also use an OSD center
channel for this setup. Extremely happy with them

rock bottom price. Usually the same kind of speakers will cost your
$500 a pair, I don't know how they do it but the IW690 just sound
