Do I need special cable to run outdoor speakers?
We strongly recommend our direct burial, CL3/FT4 waterproof cable and wire connectors that are designed for the outdoors. Our speaker wire uses a specially formulated UV-resistant, white polyethylene jacket that provides protection against water damage and allows the cables to withstand extreme weather conditions like rain, snow and high temperatures and incorporate twice the insulation of average cable. If you plan to bury the cable, OSD recommends you bury it 4-6" underground so that it's not visible nor pose a danger of somebody tripping over it. Our speaker cable is ideal to use in direct burial applications. As for the gauge, for runs up to 100 feet for background music, 16-gauge will be fine. If the run is approaching or exceeding 100 feet, we suggest 14-gauge wire.

    Add Volume Controls
Volume controls can be a great addition to a system providing both proper impedance matching and more hands-on local control of the volume in the listening area. We offer a great selection of outdoor volume controls to choose from!

    Extremely Durable
OSD outdoor speakers are developed with harsh conditions of the outdoors in mind. Our rock speakers use only non-water-absorbing materials and won't absorb any water. This is critical in winter so it won't freeze and crack. The shape is designed to withstand large amounts of pressure, extreme temperatures and moisture. Remember though, outdoor speakers are an investment, so take care of them. Storing them away from extreme weather conditions will only lengthen the time you will get enjoying outdoor speakers. These rock speakers utilize weather-resistant components for years of trouble free performance.

Andrew • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM Hello, I am looking to install some rock speakers in my garden and have come across some produced by yourself, which have been recommended, namely RX550 and BTR-800. Unfortunately I am unsure what additional equipment I would need. The garden itself is about 30 feet square enclosed by brick walls on two sides and wooden fence on the other two. Within this, there is a concrete patio in the shape of a diamond with four various-sized flower beds at each corner. It is flexible on both accounts, but I would prefer to place both speakers at the extremities width-wise (to maximise the stereo effect) and 2.5 /7 feet from the left/right (as viewing from the house) respectively. There would be a seating area (between 20 and 30 feet away) almost centrally placed width-wise at the far end of the garden (just in front of the garage). There would be planting (shrubs, mounding and low hedging etc) plus the occasional tall, thin structure in-between the speakers and seating. There is also a potential for a hole to be dug (by the door of the house) to bury a sub-woofer, if required. Water-proofed power sockets sit at either side of the house and these connect directly to further sockets internally. Unfortunately, the distance to the nearest, existing hi-fi (record deck, cassette and CD players) is about a further 30 feet, with doors and furniture to negotiate. MP3 players and smart phones are available but do not hold the bulk of the existing music collection. There is a possibility that an external TV (32” LED/LCD) would be added (between the door and french windows of the house) in the future. I would presume that some connection (be it wired or not), amplification and music source would be required and what about additional bass response ? Please could you advise, based on my description (a sketch of the garden is available as a pdf) as to any suitable equipment that would be suitable. The garden is small and the proposed system would be used occasionally so the budget would also need to reflect this. Many thanks for your assistance Regards, Andrew Gardiner

Hi Andrew, Thanks for contacting us! To start off, the BTR-800 and the RX550 are two very different speakers. The BTR-800 have 8" woofers which will give more power and bass response than the RX550, which have 5.25" woofers. The BTR-800 are more geared towards parties or louder music, whereas the RX550 is better for background music. Another big difference is the BTR-800 are Bluetooth speakers, meaning they work with smartphones/tablets, whereas the RX550 are passive speakers that will require wire and an amplifier to power them. Are you interested in a more wireless Bluetooth setup or would you prefer to wire the speakers?
Steven • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM I received these speakers as a gift. What is the best receiver-amplifier to use with them? I would like them to be loud because we have outdoor parties, but I don't need any fancy features like USB, Bluetooth, AM/FM, etc. I am hoping to find something in the $50-$100 range that is small and well designed. I am absolutely baffled by the amount of information and misinformation available online. I literally have a masters degree in electrical engineering and can't seem to figure it out. Shouldn't this be easy? Thanks!

Hi Steven: The best choice for you would be the Class D XMP100 Power Amplifier. You have the ability to drive both a single or two pair of the RX550. The amp also features Automatic dual source switching so you have multiple sources you can choose from. It also features Bass an Treble controls, and front panel Volume and Balance knobs. And you even have three options to turn the unit on including Manual on/off, Auto Sensing and a hard wire connection for a 12 volt trigger. Want more sources checkout our Pre One, Pre amplifier which you can add to the XMP100. TL/4485
Emily • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM How snow resistant are these? I am a city audio engineer looking into these for an outdoor pavilion in Idaho. We have a ton of snow throughout November-February.

Hi Emily: Can you tell me alittle more about your project? Are you limited to only Rock Speakers? Will the sytem be 70V? Have you considered patio type speakers; our highest commercially certified weatherproof speakers the AP525 and AP650 also have built in 70V transformers. Avaialble in white or black and feature unique mounting brackets not only swivel but tilt as well. tim@osdaudio.com, let me know if you need to discuss further. TL/4600
