Features & Specifications

Our flagship 6.5-inch OSD Audio IW690 Series Kevlar® speaker pair can handle the most demanding audio signals for your home theater system and listening rooms. This superior-quality pair of speakers from Outdoor Speaker Depot has high-grade Kevlar® woofers and 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters.

Go ahead and dial up your listening levels with these in-wall speaker. The reinforced ABS polymer frame has a paintable grille.

Because these OSD in-wall speakers use an infinite baffle design, you won't need back boxes. With infinite baffle, the wall cavity becomes the enclosure. For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.

These speakers come with a 10-year warranty and our lifetime technical support service. The dimensions of each speaker are 12 1/4 inches by 8 3/16 inches with a 3 1/8-inch depth. The wall cutout should measure 10 7/8 inches by 6 3/4 inches. Browse our free in-wall speaker guides and how-to videos.

Features
· High-grade Kevlar® Woofer
· Gold-plated compression posts
· Reinforced ABS Polymer frame
· Paintable frame and grille

Do These Speakers Require a Back Box?
Back boxes are not required because in-wall speakers use an infinite baffle design. This allows the speakers to work in various size spaces, like inside a wall. OSD Audio Speakers can adapt to a broad range of enclosure sizes and can be installed with or without an enclosure (with infinite baffle, the wall cavity becomes the enclosure). There is a tradeoff, however. Without a back box, sound may bleed to another room. This may or may not be issue but if you decide to build an enclosure, it needs to be at least 5 to 6 inches to accommodate the depth of the speaker. Also, it's not a bad idea to ad fiberfill inside the cavity, which can be purchased at any hardware store.

For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.

Jonathan
from Louisville, KY asked:
April 23, 2018
I have ICE660s currently installed in my ceiling for LCR and RR RL. I'm thinking of using these as RR and RL and using the ICE660 in the rear as height channel for Atmos setup. Will these speakers balance well with the ICE660 speaker (ie won't overpower the sound, similar eq sound)?
1 Answer
Hi Jonathan: The best match for your ICE660 would be the CW540 In-Wall Square Grill Speakers. They feature the identical Cone material and have the same 1" Silk Soft Dome Tweeter as the ICE660. You want to have the same timber match for all the speakers if you possibly can. The Kevlar Cone and Aluminum Tweeter of the IW690 would not be a proper match. TL/4924

Is there a wall bracket that can be used with this speaker?
1 Answer
Hi Jeff: This is a In-wall speaker that features dog ear mounting brackets but it needs a wall to mount to. We do have a couple of choices for indoor/outdoor patio speakers that have mounting brackets and dedicated cabinets. Check out the AP 670 which was named the number one outdoor speaker for its bass response. Or look at the new AP650 which features a bracket that swivels and tilts as well. TL/4103

Sorry if this is silly question however, I'm looking for in wall rear surround speakers. Can I use these solely as rear speakers? Thanks.
1 Answer
Hi Joe, Yes! You can use these speakers as the rear left/right and the front left/right. These are high-definition Kevlar speakers intended for use with home theaters.

Are these recommended for ceiling installations as well?
1 Answer
Hi Val, We have the ICE650 ceiling speakers, which are the same speaker but in a round frame for ceiling applications. The 6.5" Kevlar models are one of our most popular speakers and the sound is excellent. CL/MA 1815

Abel
from Houston asked:

Is the grill for this unit aluminum or steel. Looking for outdoor salt air application.
1 Answer
Hi Abel, The grille is powder coated; however, we do not recommend this in-wall speaker for outdoor applications. Take a look at our weather-resistant ceiling speakers like the ICE600WRS which offers excellent sound quality. If you’re set on rectangular wall speakers, try the IW680 Pro series speaker. The speaker grille is powder coated but it would be wise add outdoor rust retardant paint. You will also want to apply a silicon sealant between the frame and mounting surface, plus silicon to the exposed metal components on the crossover and speaker inputs located on the back of the speaker before placing in the wall. Good luck, TL/MA 1721

Derek
from Ohio asked:

Can you buy a wall bracket for this speaker?
1 Answer
Hi Derek: The New Construction Wall Bracket that we stock is recommended for most of our 6.5" 2 way in-wall speakers except the IW690 because the speaker is a 1/2 inch or so shorter than the others. But like all of our In-Ceiling and in-Wall speakers they feature Retro mounting brackets so they can be installed with out the need for a new Construction Bracket. The IW690 features six dog ear mounting posts which provides a very sturdy install. TL

How do you install these when one side is against wall stud? It appears the dog ears only tighten on sides versus say up and down which would help? So the speaker would not be stable in the wall with only being held on one side.
1 Answer
Unfortunately the dog ears only fold out to the sides and are not adjustable to the bottom or top. I would recommend cutting at least one notch in your stud (probably for the middle dog ear). That would give you four tie downs which would be ample to hold the speaker in place. TL

Could I use this speaker as a center channel?
1 Answer
Hi Brian, Technically, you can use this as a center channel; however, the IW690 is not specifically designed for that purpose. To get the most from your surround sound, we suggest choosing the IW550LCR. . CL/MA

are these the correct style for right and left rear
2 Answers
Paul, Yes these will be great from a L & R rear or front. CL
Submitted by: Customer Service - Q&A on December 8, 2011
Paul: The IW690 are an excellent choice for front left and right when combined with our OSD550LCR speaker (use for center channel). In theory the right, left and center speaker should have the same tweeter and cone material for the woofers so to gurantee proper timbre match for the front stage. It is not critical to match your surround channels to the front stage. There are a number of choices for your rear channel including the IW690 in-Wall or ICE670LCR in-ceiling. Your choices may have to do more with space available to mount the speakers and run the speaker wire. TL
