are these speakers for listening to music on your phone? does it have Bluetooth?
1 Answers
Hi Oscar: These speakers need to be hooked up to an Amplifier like our XMP100 a true Class D power amplifier. You could plug yopu smartphone or tablet or even your laptop to by connecting a 3.5mm to RCA cable adaptor. The 3.5mm would connect to the headphone jack of of your device. You could also add a Bluetooth Receiver priced between 15.00 and 25.00 for a good one so you can sync your Bluetooth Enabled device to the Bluetooth Amplifer connected to the XMP100. You also have an option of adding a second source since the XMP100 features automatic source switching. You would still have to install the speakers in the wall and run CL3 rated speaker cable from the Amp into the wall then to the speakers. We sell the wire and the wall plates for a clean install. I currently have ICE840 (in-ceiling) and dual subwoofers installed for my 7.2 surround system in my home theater (16 x 18). I am planning to replace old tower speakers (dual 5" woofer) with an in-wall speaker. Which product will provide better sound IW840 or IW 550?
1 Answers
Hi John: We would typically recommend the IW-840 as your front stage right and left speaker with a IW-550 as your center channel speaker with a step up using three IW-550 as your left, right and center. The IW-550 has a little more mid woofer area being two 5.25": cones versus a single 8 of the IW-840. TL/3918

I have a pair of the iw840 to install. I am wondering how far i should go to create a baffle in the wall. Should I just use some bat insulation or should i use some 2x4s to create a box in the wall and attempt to seal that as well as i can? I won't be able to build a true box and put that in the wall. I am afraid if I leave in unsealed they will sound small.
1 Answers
Hi Pascal: These speakers work well just mounted in the wall, and better if you take the time to create a sealed enclosure above, below and behind the speaker and sometimes using the 2 x 4 fire break studs above and below. . A bead of silicone to seal the gaps works well. Another trick is to add a layer of fiber fill on the back wall of the enclosure you are creating. You can find fiber fill at Walmart or Joanne's fabrics (It is the same materials used to to stuff pillows). There You Tube videos showing you how to glue a layer to the internal walls of the enclosure. You can experiment with different amounts of fiberfill actually tuning the enclosure. The Fiberfill will make the speaker think it is working in a bigger enclosure. Good Luck TL/3903

Does it come with or need mounting bracket? My ceiling is bare, just studs. thanks!

Hi Riad: Are your ceiling joists always exposed or will you be covering them with Sheetrock? Both the in-wall and in-ceiling speakers feature retro fit mounting brackets systems. We have new construction brackets that the contractor cuts out when covering the wall with Sheetrock. These speaker as well as the In-ceiling speakers need to have semi sealed cavity behind them which the Sheetrock creates. If you are not going to close up the ceiling you should look at our Indoor/outdoor patio speakers which actually feature their own enclosures. Let us know open or closed... TL/3861

Are these speakers suitable to used in a bathroom ceiling? I'm concerned that the grilles will rust from moisture from the shower mist - the ones I have now (different manufacturer) have that problem. Thanks.
1 Answers
No - you would want to use the ICE800WRS for bathrooms. We also have a single stereo speaker version called the ICE800TTWRS if you only have room for one speaker.

5.1 layout question: If I were to use the IW545 for center, the ICE640 for rear surrounds.. which would be a better fit for the front: IW680 or the IW840? I'd like to get the best imaging as possible.
1 Answers
Hi Mike P: Either speaker will work for your application. They are both the proper timbre match for the IW545. The 8" IW-840 has a little broader bass response but it really comes down to your budget. So the Good would be: (1) IW545 and (1) pair of the IW-680 The Better would be (1) IW545 and (1) pair of the IW840 and The Best would be (1) IW545 and (2) each of the IW545 for Right and Left vertically mounted on either side of the TV. Good Luck TL/3115

I've got a quick question, when painting the grills do you suggest removing the inner cloth cover before painting?
1 Answers
Hi Eric, Yes you should probably take the cloth out before painting. Use light coats when painting so you don't clog the holes on the grill. Be very careful taking it off in one piece. Use some kind of adhesive to glue it back on. The cloth isn't completely necessary unless it is an outdoor speaker. CS 2549

Is this model IW840 a 3-way magnetically shielded speaker?
1 Answers
Hi Joe, These in-wall speakers are not magnetically shielded. If you have concerns about magnetic shielding, you might consider using three of the IW550LCR speakers for your front stage, mounting your right and left speaker vertically and one speaker for your center channel horizontally. Keep in mind that if you have a plasma or LCD TV, you will not need to be concerned over magnetic shielding. TL/MA - 1519

Setting up a home theatre room. My rec room is 20' long and 15' wide; however, the speaker mounting area will be nearly half that. I am lookin for a decently priced sound system in wall that will accomodate this... The drywall is not up yet and I need to know since its a basement do I take insulation out of the wall where these speakers are going? If you can send me links to products you'd suggest for a 4:1 system (no centre speaker) it would be greatly appreciated. If so i can draw out what the room looks like and send a link.

Hi Gary, The insulation should not come in contact with the speakers. The IW840 are our best polypropylene. You could take a look at the next step up in quality, the Kevlar pair our IW850. We also have a 10" in wall sub and amp combo that would work quite well (OSD IWS10 & SMP250). If you want a powered sub to complete your 4.1, we do have a few choices, such as the PS10. In addition, the Yamaha YH-RX-V373 is a great home theater receiver. Beyond that, all you need is speaker cable such as our 16-2. Let us know if you have further questions: IW850: IWS10 combo: PS10: Receiver: CL/MA 1271

Do these come in any color other than white? If not, can the grill be painted?
1 Answers
Hi Brian These come in an off-white color that is easily paintable without using a primer. It includes a cutout template that doubles as a paintshield. You will need to remove the soft cloth inside the grillsf when you paint them. TL

Great Sound, great price
I have installed these speakers in my home theater. They are my front speakers in a 7.2 surround system. Plenty of sound; clear with a wide range. Painted them to match the wall color and they look great. Installation was supper easy. Reading other reviews, many people made comments about the feet breaking off during installation...had NO SUCH PROBLEMS...just make sure that you aren't using an electrical drill to will over tighten and snap off the feet!! Definitely looking forward to many family nights in the theater enjoying the sound!!

great value, quality and customer service
Speakers arrived quickly and were installed without difficulty. One tweeter was not working and after an email, they sent me a new tweeter, no questions asked. They didn't even want the defective unit back to verify. I wish all companies were as easy to deal with as this one. Oh yeah, the speakers sound great. Mike, Hernando, Fl.

Great sound at a great price!
I used the IW 840's to replace old tired in wall speakers. The install was a snap and I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality nice highs and the bass was more than adequate. The speakers are used for background music in multiple rooms at home, as I've already said the sound quality is quite good for my application, the IW 840"s could definitely be used for a nice basic home theater system. Now that I have listened to them I will be ordering the 2 additional pairs needed to finish replacing the other tired in walls. For the price you can't beat the sound quality!

Being that I am very knowledgeable and have been in the home theater business for nearly 8 years, purchasing from Outdoor Speaker Depot was extremely easy. The products I purchased were all in stock and the delivery was quick. Shipping charges were average; I spent just over $1,000 and shipping was about $85. They even substituted the higher grade volume control because they either had a computer error or ran out of inventory just after my purchase. (Saved me about $30.) I will purchase again in the future.

Beginners Luck!!! WOW! ...
Beginners Luck!!! WOW! I'm building my first real "Home Theaterî on a budget. I must admit that I really was not prepared for the awesome experience that I just had with these speakers. First of all, ordering and delivery was excellent; everything arrived as planned. I replaced some old makeshift speakers with two 8"(front) and one 6.5" center. Although I still have two 8"(rear) to replace, I immediately turned-on the ñIncredible Hulkî and watched it with my teenager. We were so blown away that the first thing that he said after the movie ended was, "When are you going to install the others!?" If you are just testing the audiophile waters, like me, you owe it to yourself to start with these speakers and grow up to the big boys if need be!

I bought this pair of speakers for front left and right in my living room. The living is open to my kitchen and dining room, as well as being a large room with 20 foot ceilings. These speakers were much better than I could have expected. They sound great and were very easy to install. For the money, I don't think you find any better
