Do I need special cable to run outdoor speakers?
We strongly recommend our direct burial, CL3/FT4 waterproof cable and wire connectors that are designed for the outdoors. Our speaker wire uses a specially formulated UV-resistant, white polyethylene jacket that provides protection against water damage and allows the cables to withstand extreme weather conditions like rain, snow and high temperatures and incorporate twice the insulation of average cable. If you plan to bury the cable, OSD recommends you bury it 4-6" underground so that it's not visible nor pose a danger of somebody tripping over it. Our speaker cable is ideal to use in direct burial applications. As for the gauge, for runs up to 100 feet for background music, 16-gauge will be fine. If the run is approaching or exceeding 100 feet, we suggest 14-gauge wire.

    Add Volume Controls
Volume controls can be a great addition to a system providing both proper impedance matching and more hands-on local control of the volume in the listening area. We offer a great selection of outdoor volume controls to choose from!

    Extremely Durable
OSD outdoor speakers are developed with harsh conditions of the outdoors in mind. Our rock speakers use only non-water-absorbing materials and won't absorb any water. This is critical in winter so it won't freeze and crack. The shape is designed to withstand large amounts of pressure, extreme temperatures and moisture. Remember though, outdoor speakers are an investment, so take care of them. Storing them away from extreme weather conditions will only lengthen the time you will get enjoying outdoor speakers. These rock speakers utilize weather-resistant components for years of trouble free performance.

Scott • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM I am considering purchasing a Sonos Connect:Amp and a pair of speakers to add to my Sonos system at home, because I want to add an outdoor music zone. Would a pair of RS850s be a good match for the power provided by the Sonos Connect:Amp? http://www.sonos.com/shop/products/connectamp
    Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Scott, The Sonos connect amp is rated at 50 Watts. Consider a pair of 6.5" speakers at max for this application. Our RS680 rock speakers would be an excellent choice. CL/MA 1832
Denny • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM How does the RS850 and RS840 rock speakers compare? What's the difference? Thanks
    Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Denny, The RS850 outdoor rock speaker is our top of the line model in that category. It has higher volume capability; a larger tweeter for the highs; and the frequency response goes slightly lower, which translates to more bass. The RS840 pair offers very solid overall performance and are popular for their economical price. CL/MA 1846
David • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM My amp is a Crown CE1000. Would these speakers be a good choice?
    Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi David, Two of our powerful RS850 rock speakers (300 Watts) would be an excellent match to your CROWN CE 1000 ( 275watts per channel) CL/MA 1873
John • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM I have a 2x100W 8ohm amp to power speakers for a very large outdoor area. Because of the large area, I generally play at fairly high volume, which seems to shorten the life of the speakers. How do I choose between the 850, 840 and 805 speakers for this application?
    Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
John, Thank you. Well all of our 8" rock speakers can handle anywhere from 175 - 300 watts, so if you're only going to push each speaker with 100 watts, you wouldn't be playing them to their full potential, but you can get the job done. RS850 is our highest quality rock speaker, so this will give you the best sound out of the 8" models, but you will get the best outcome with a high current amplifier such as our AMP200. -BM 2090
Stephanie • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM I too am wanting to use Sonos. Would I be better off just using a Connect and attaching it to an amp/receiver to use the larger rock speakers? We have a very open, large area that I had planned to use 2 of the RS850's and then just use a Connect Amp on the smaller outdoor patio speakers. What do you suggest?
    Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Stephanie: I would suggest purchasing our OSD-AMP200 and two OVC300 Volume Controls. And using a single SONOS connect to the AMP200 and have it power your RS-850 Rock speakers on Speaker A and then connect your Patio Speakers to Speaker B output. The Volume Controls should be located somewhere near each pair of speakers. This will allow you to adjust each speaker pair to the other. You can get away with just connecting the AMP200 directly to the two pair of speakers and using the SONOS Connect as your source. TL-2144
