I have a 20x13 foot room that has cathedral 15' cathedral ceilings. One wall of the room has a floor to ceiling fireplace where the TV will go. I will be sitting 13' away from the TV. Should I purchase in wall speakers for left and right or in ceiling speakers? The in-ceiling speakers would be about 12' high in the pitched ceiling over the TV. Distance from the TV to those speakers would be about 5'. I can get access to ceiling through the garage if need be to wire the speakers. Any suggestions?

HI Kris: Whether you use In-ceiling or In-wall speaker for your front stage will depend on the angle of your ceiling right above the TV/Monitor. The key is the Tweeter for each speaker must be facing the the optimum Viewing/Listening position (I believe you mentioned 13 feet). We recommend using angled In-ceiling LCR speakers for front stage. And work very well as well for both Surround or Effects speakers due to the mounting flexibility (they can be mounted closer to the wall). Most of the systems we design call for the 8" ACE-870 for the three front stage speakers and the 6.5" In-ceiling speakers for the Surrounds /Effects (DOLBY ATMOS or DTS:X) The IW-850 will work for the right and left front stage if you can aim the tweeter. The MKIW-550 In-wall LCR speaker is the perfect match for these as well if the cathedral ceiling angle comes into play. Let me know if can answer anymore questions regarding the rest of your system; tim@osdaudio.com TL/4400

I have a room 12x14, and looking to install a theater 5.1 surround. The flat screen will be centered on the 14' wall over a fireplace insert...so viewing will be 12' from tv to back wall. What speaker setup would you recommend? I have attic access above the room. The wall with the tv has a 2 foot depth as the fireplace is a pass through (double sided). I am looking for a 5.1 setup, and would be purchasing all speakers for this setup. The Yamaha 337 looks good, but I'd upgrade to the Bluetooth version.....

Hi Greg: Based upon what you told us, I would select 5 of the ICE-660 angled LCR speakers especially since you have access to the ceiling and you are dealing with a fireplace which sometimes makes it interesting to run wires to in wall location around your TV monitor. The angled speakers were created as the last option behind floor standing/bookshelf speakers on stands/In-wall mounted around the TV to the angled In-Ceiling. The angle lets you mount the speakers closer to the wall almost right above the TV angled out with the tweeters firing directly at he optimum seating/viewing area. I am assuming you may have a couch up against the back wall or close to it. The Angled speakers give you more flexibility on where to mount the surrounds in proximity to your listening area. We also just received our new Airbase wireless Sub kit which allows you to use anyone of our external powered sub woofers and eliminate having to hard-wire from the Receiver to the sub woofer in the room. You have a transmitter that connects to your Sub out from the Receiver and sends a signal wireless to the Receiver that sits on top of the Sub itself. You will need two AC outlets one for the Powered Sub and a second to power the wireless Receiver. We also have CL3 Rated speaker wire approved for in-wall.in-ceiling installation that you will need. Plus TV Mounts, look for a tilt mount if your going to be above a fireplace as the most affordable option. Also checkout our line of Arlington AC Power kits and don't forget the HDMI cable you will need as well. Good luck and let us know if you need additional info. TL/3680

which of your 8 inch kelvar speakers is the best for 7.1 surround?
1 Answers
Hi Marvin: The optimal Kevlar speakers we would recommend would be the IW550LCR Center Channel speaker with a pair of the IW850 8.0" 2 way speakers to make up the Left, Center and Right Front stage (thus the LCR). Then we really like the Angled speakers for the mounting flexibility of the back and side surrounds. The ICE870 is a Kevlar Angled LCR speaker. And our only 8" angled speaker. TS-2299

I an replacing speakers that were mounted next to the floor joice using MkW850's and the dog ears will not work one side of three speakers; what should I do? I thought about removing the plastic dog ears and brackets , move the speaker over carving out enough dry wall and screwing them directly to the floor joice. Any other options?
1 Answers
Hi Cal, If you have already cut the hole (which it sounds like you have), it would it be tough moving the speaker over without leaving an opening in the wall. Removing the dog ears would work; you may need to remove the plastic guides as well so it is flush with the frame. Assuming you can still drop the speaker in the existing hole but cannot activate any of the three dog ears on that side, you could add a piece of wood next to your joist maybe recessed half inch so you can screw directly into the wood. You'll probably get away with just one screw on that side while tightening the other three on the opposite side. That way you would only have to remove one dog ear and guide. Let us know if this helps. TL/MA -1581

Is this bundle good for music cds. Kevlar Series 5.1 Ceiling/Wall Speaker Bundle for large rooms
1 Answers
Hi John: Typically in-wall speakers are used for custom Home Theaterinstallations (usually the right and left of the front stage). But they are also are used when you have an application for critical listening to music versus just for background music where in-ceilings are more popular . An prime example would be using these in a home office where you would always be sitting in the same location and the speakers can be setup fora true right and left stereo expieience. These speakers feature a special Kevlar cone which calls for an elaborate crossover network. At 92 dB they are very efficent and can handle plenty of power at 175 watts RMS per channel. A great choice for critical listening of CD or Digital music libraries recorder at 328 GPS or higher (either WAV or AIFF files). Thank you for considering OSD Barnded products. TL #601

I am having problems finding a construction bracket for the IW850 kevlar in wall speaker. Will the bracket for the IW840 work?
1 Answers
Hi Jeremy: The IW850 is an inch taller than the IW840 speaker so the recommended bracket (for the IW840) would not fit. Note the speaker can be mounted without the new construction bracket. All of our speakers are designed for retro fit where the walls are already in place. The new construction brackets help in speaker placement while being used as a cutout template. It also provides additional support. These speakers are not that heavy. The mounting system is commonly referred to as dog ears. It provides six tighening points to the drywall whether a new construction bracket is used or not. TL TL

I notice that the wall has to be cut out to fit these speakers. Is that something that I might have to hire someone to do since I'm not qualified to cut walls?

Hi bbwoof: Yes, if you do not feel comfotable cuuting the holes you may want to find a local custom installer or local electrician. You might check Angie's list in your area. TL

Are these wall speakers paintable?

All of our In-Wall (including the IW-850) and In-Ceiling speakers can be painted. The cutout template that comes with the speakers also doubles as a paint shield allowing you to color match both the Frame and Grill to your decor. TL

IW850
I finished out a 12 x 14 media room and used 4 of the IW850's for the fronts and back, 2 of the ICE850's in the ceiling for surround and the IW550 for the center speaker. I matched it up with an Onkyo TX-NR709. Once I used Onkyo's Audyssey MultEQ® XT Advanced Room-correction and Speaker Calibration setup which takes about 10 minutes.....the sound rocks! Crank it up and no distortion. Matched it with a 12 inch floor firing Polk audio sub. It's currently a 7.1 system but I'm looking to add 2 highs (speakers) and 2 wides (speakers) which the Onkyo will handle up to a 9.2 system. Zero regrets with theses speakers and receiver. Pic's made before room completed but they look good in the wall.
ProsClear and clean sound, hear all the instruments being played the way they should be heard. Price. Support.

I have set up a pair of ...
I have set up a pair of IW850 for stereo listening, due to space limitation. Easy intallation, quality build, nice looking. Sound is nice for highs, ok for lows due to it is inwall speakers. I use a dedicated sub that fills the lower notes very nicely, Yamaha YST-315, excellent combination with IW-850. If you are getting the 8" for the base, get the 6" instead and invest in a good sub. Otherwise delivery was quick and well packaged, great company to do business with. I compared side by side with mid level bookshelf speakers: Klipsh B-3 and Polks M-40, the I-W850 did an excellent job, when paired with a subwoofer. The highs are somewhat bright but really clean and no distortion at higher volumes. I use an HK-3490 stereo receiver, 120 amp. It drives these speakers with ease and very little distortion. The Kevlar woofers have a nice tone to it and are capable of a clean sound reproduction. These speakers can get really loud. I keep the treble/base at the zero position. Out of the box they sounded first "weird". as they need a break in time so give it 100 hourse or so of play time it will open up and sound much better. I highly recommend this product for HT or music listening coupled with a nice subwoofer. The price was excellent compared to the more popular brands and honestly I thought they sounded better to my critical ears. Sure you can top them but you will have to spent an extra 500 to 1000 dollars per pair.

I bought and installed a pair of these as the L and R front speakers of a home theater system. These speakers are absolutely incredible...amazing sound. They project a nice, rich base, but have enough treble to be an effective home theater speaker, too. They were also very easy to install. I highly recommend.

I bought a pair of these for our kitchen, and I'm very impressed! Like most speakers, these sound far better for on-axis listening, but they sound pretty good outside the room also. I spent a little over $300 for a pair of these, a volume control, wall plate, and wiring (only half of which I ended up using). That's $200 less than just the Def Techs I was looking at, so to say I'm pleased would be an understatement. Great company, great service, and great sound. Thank you!
