Lifetime Tech Support

Sold in pairs, the ICE850 in-ceiling speakers are one of our most popular models because these ceiling speakers offer high-caliber sound without the high caliber price tag. With a power handling of 175 Watts, the ICE850s are an ideal choice for both whole house audio and home theaters and are well suited for larger spaces due to the 8" Kevlar® woofer's ability to produce powerful but smooth bass tones. Kevlar® woofers retain their shape even at very high energy levels which means you can turn up the volume and experience spine-tingling sound without distortion or coloration. A sophisticated crossover network provides an exceptional blend of low and top-end frequency response.

Audiophiles Love Kevlar®
Woofers Kevlar® is a super strong material known for its ability to produce powerful but very smooth bass tones. Kevlar® woofer cones retain their shape even at very high energy levels, which means you can crank up the volume and experience spine-tingling sound without distortion or coloration.

Pivoting Aluminum Dome Tweeter
The job of the tweeter is to deliver the higher frequencies of music and soundtracks. Tweeters can be made of many different materials. The ICE850 use an aluminum dome tweeter which is highly accurate sounding on high notes. The tweeter is also adjustable, meaning it can be aimed toward the listening area. This can make a big difference in sound quality especially for dialog and higher frequencies.

How Does this Speaker Mount in the Ceiling?
Customers often ask us if they need special installation mounting brackets on their OSD ceiling speakers. The answer is no and here’s why. All our in-ceiling speakers feature a dog leg (L-shaped) mounting system that is part of the frame. Before you install the speakers, remove the grille and you’ll see several the mounting screws near the front frame. These screws need to be loosened to activate the dog leg clamps. Use a screwdriver to loosen (turn to the left) these screws and the clamp will come loose. When the speaker is in position in the ceiling, tighten (turn to the right) the screw and the speaker will be secured to the ceiling.

What Type of SpeakerWire and What Gauge?
Wiring is not included with in-ceiling speakers so you will have to purchase some. We recommend our OSD Audio CL3/FT4 cable that is UL (fire) rated for in-wall and outdoor speaker installs. This type of cable includes a heavy-duty outer jacket approved for in-wall/in-ceiling installation. The high-quality plastic jacket is also very flexible so it's easy to run the wires inside the wall. As for the gauge, for runs up to 100 feet for background music, 16-gauge will be fine. If the run is approaching or exceeding 100 feet, we suggest 14-gauge wire.

What Is Butyl Rubber Surround?
With almost double the shelf life of foam, butyl rubber has been the choice of speaker designers looking to optimize the sound based upon materials that go together. The Surround is just one of the integral parts of the speaker's motor structure. Butyl Rubber gives the speaker more excursion capability featuring a deeper bass with a wider frequency response, and its shelf life is closer to 25 years compared to the foam at 12 to 15 years.

Testing the Sound Quality of In-Ceiling Speakers
Many customers like to test the sound quality of their new OSD Audio in-ceiling speakers before they install them. Keep in mind, however, that these flush-mount speakers are designed to be used in the wall or ceiling. Uninstalled in-wall/in-ceiling speakers will sound weak and tinny because without the proper enclosure (in this case your house wall) the speaker can’t produce the sound pressure level it needs. If you want to try them out, we recommend mounting the in-ceiling speakers into a box of about 3 cubic ft. or larger; or simply mount them in the ceiling and then listen. This will give you an accurate measure of the sound quality.

For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.

Rob • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM Should these speakers be installed with a back box? Also, does the package come with a new construction bracket?
Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Rob: If you have access to behind the Sheetrock that it is always better to be able to reinforce the speaker or if you are just cutting a hole and dropping the speaker in at least adding some fiber fill would be a good idea. The speaker has dog ear mounting brackets that are part of the frame. New Construction brackets are optional but not critical unless you have new construction and are worried about your speaker placement. The new construction brackets would not be used if you are thinking of building a back box (or reinforcing the area behind the speaker. TL/4220
Kevin • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM Do you need a bracket for new construction?
Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Kevin: The new construction bracket helps in speaker placement making sure the sheet rock is cut out for each speaker the same time it is installed. It works as a template for the cutout. All the speakers have retrofit mounting so the new construction bracket helps with the install but is not mandatory that you use it. TL/4552
Tammy • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM What back box would you recommend for these speakers?
Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Tammy: I would recommend adding a couple of pieces of wood that would match your ceiling joists (Usually 2x8 or 2x10) and place one six inches on either side of your cutout. If it is an open ceiling you will want to cover the two joists and two additional pieces you have added. You can even seal the seams with silicone if so desired. Then add fiber fill around the speaker to help tune the box. The Fiber fill makes the speaker think it is operating in a larger box. Some people use foam inside the box gluing it to the internal sides. Technically you can get away without building a box, but the box will tighten things up like the bass. TL/4838
Tim Cronan • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM I want to retrofit these in an old home with the current ceiling material 1 1/4 inch thick. Will the dog ears work with this thickness? If not can I replace the current dog ears’ screws with longer screws? Thanks
Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Tim: The ICE850 Dog Ear Clamps measure just under 2" so you would have no problem with the 1 1/4" depth you are dealing with on your particular ceiling application. TL/5131
Mason • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM Replacing some old trim speakers.  Curious about dimensions.  Believe it says 10 1/4 here but the exterior trim of my old ones measures a hair over 10.5.  Dont want to repaint.  Fine with the trim if it covers the old spot, or should I look at the trimless?
Customer Service • 12/17/2019, 2:17:43 PM
Hi Mason:These will work for your application. You have at least a half an inch to work with. The Trim-less design (ACE850) has an outside diameter of 11" with a cutout of 9 3/4". The ICE850 has an outside diameter of 10 1/4 with a cutout of 9" (Your speaker may feature a cutout of 9 1/4") The ICE 850 would fit without any modification. The Trim-less ACE850 would mean you would have to widen your hole another 1/2 inch. I hope that helps.TL/5690
