Why are they called outdoor speakers if you need to paint the grills with Rust-o-leum or clear coat? Why wouldn't you use an aluminum grill?
1 Answer
Hi Rob: These do have aluminum grills based upon what it says on the web page: Superior sound quality and a sleek, modern look make the OSD Audio AP450 Outdoor Patio Speaker Pair the perfect choice for outdoor environments. With a rust-resistant aluminum grille and a composite cabinet, these all-weather speakers can handle temperature fluctuations between -20 degrees F and 200 degrees F. We recommend placing the speakers anywhere from 8 to 12 feet apart for best stereo dispersion. · Rust-resistant aluminum grille and composite cabinet · Handles temperature fluctuations from –20F to 200F If you are referring to the owner's manual note that the manual is generic covering all our outdoor speakers some that do not have aluminum grills. But these have the aluminum grills. TL/4990

Clarification. It says a pair is 1 = 1pair Not sure if that is an error, a pair by definition is 2 like items or 2ea = 1pair. Can you clarify?
1 Answer
Hi Robert: Sorry for the confusion, one pair typically means you are getting a pair of matching speakers a stereo Left and right speaker. Most sources you are connecting feature a stereo output Right and Left (+/-). TL/4486

I have a few speakers on my patio already, but would like to add a few more to increase my listening area. I have a great canopy tree that I would like hang these underneath a branch. they would get a little wet a few months out of the year. would these hold up to some water or is there a better speaker?
1 Answer
Hi Bryn: Our highest rated outdoor speaker are either our AP525 or AP650. Both are best when dealing directly with the elements. Both are Sealed design with no port. They also feature a unique mounting bracket for more flexible mounting options. Note: The AP450 does feature a sealed design as well but does not have the output capability to match either of the AP525 or AP650. TL/4182

Just received these as a gift and they seem great! How do I connect them to an iPhone to play music outside? Are they wireless?
1 Answer
HI Melissa: These speakers need an external amplifier to provide power to these speakers. Checkout our AMP 120 which you can connect your iPhone using a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter cable. The 3.5 mm plugs into your headphone jack on your iPhone then the dual RCA plug into the main inputs of the AMP 120. You will also need some Speaker wire to connect between the Amplifier and your speakers like our 16/2 two conductor CL3/FT4 rated cable. The cable is approved for in-wall, outdoor and direct burial installations. You will need enough to connect to both speakers. TL/3968

Can i use this speakers for a 5.1 indoor set up.

Hi Samson, Yes, however it is a very small set of speakers. I would recommend going with the AP650 or at least the AP525. These two models are higher definition and have more bass response.

Hi I am looking to purchase these and the Ap840's for my back yard. I noticed that it says they are "weather resistant" and to install them under the eaves troughs, which I plan to do, however they will be on the side of the house that receives the most rain. will these (AP450's and AP840's) be ok and last along time when they are hit with heavy down pours every so often throughout the summer? they will be taken down during the winter months.
1 Answer
HI Mitch: These should work fine in your application, you typically would be aiming the speakers downward and the ports on these AP840 are extra long making it harder for water to get in. The AP450 is sealed and not as much a concern. And its smart to plan on bringing the speakers in for the winter. Good Luck TL/3205

In the description of the speakers it talks about Binding Post connection but if you look in the more info it talks about spring clips. Which do these speakers have?
1 Answer
Hi Richard, Bare wire - either screw down or spring clip. The back is not weather proofed however, so best to have them mounted under an eave for extra protection.

Will the AP450 speakers work with my Sony Mini Hi-Fi model MHC-GX99. According to the specs, this unit has 95 watts per channel. Thanks for your help.
1 Answer
Hi Barry, The AP450 can handle up to 110 watts max, so you should be feeding each speaker about 50-80 watts for optimal sound. That receiver should be just fine if it's pushing 95 watts per channel, as that's probably a peek rating. Thanks! BM 2751

what would I need to hook these to my pc?
1 Answer
Hi Tonya, These speakers need to be powered by an amplifier or receiver. You can run something as simple as our AMP60 to power these speakers. You would then run an RCA cable from your computer into the AMP60, which is wired to the speakers. -BM 2424

I have purchased several outdoor speakers and have not found a pair to withstand the elements even though I have them under a covered railing on my deck. Do these really keep from rusting even on the front grilles?
1 Answer
Hi Dan, The grills are powder coated to prevent rust; however, to further weatherize the grills, we suggest spraying clear coat or Rustoleum for added protection. CL/MA2035

Judi Mitchek
from Burlington, CO asked:
May 13, 2013
What kind of speaker wire will I need? What else will I need to hook to an iPad dock? Will wireless speakers work with these?
1 Answer
Hi Judi, The AP490 patio speakers will need a receiver or amp to drive them, like our AMP120. Depending on the iPad dock, you can connect the speakers via an RCA cable or mini to RCA adapter. Using your iPad dock as the source into the AMP120, you would go out of 'line 2" with that same signal into wireless speakers. The AP490 connects to the AMP120 with outdoor speaker cable, which we also offer. For runs 80 feet or under, 16 gauge wire will work fine. If you're running cable from 80-200 feet, go with a 14 gauge. If your run exceeds 200 feet, consider using a 12 gauge cable. CL/MA 1893

April 10, 2013
Hi... Are weatherproof with weather at sea? Since the sea weather is very corrosive. That time is guaranteed for weather at sea? Thanks...
1 Answer
Hi Hugy, The AP450 patio speakers are designed for extreme weather conditions but these speakers are not classified as marine speakers. Salt water could harm to the grills and brackets as well as the speaker components. You can further weatherize the grill and brackets by spraying Rust-Oleum before installation. This will help prevent corrosion but is not a guarantee. CL/MA 1789

1 Answer
Hi Tim, The AP450 patio speakers require an amp or receiver to drive them. Our AMP60 would be a good choice for your application, or you can connect our Classic Jet powered speakers directly to your TV without an amp/receiver.
