CL3 rated outdoor speaker wires are built for the specific demands of an outdoor location and are better able to stand up to rain, snow and temperature extremes, whether very hot or very cold. CL3/FT4 cable is UL (fire) rated for residential and most commercial in-wall and in-ceiling applications. It is designed to run inside walls, unlike some conventional wiring which could pose significant danger if it ever caught fire. OSD in-wall speaker wire is CL3 rated and has a heavy-duty outer jacket so it can be used safely for in-wall or in-ceiling applications. For orders, or any questions about the right speaker wires for your needs, contact Outdoor Speaker Depot Monday through Friday between 9 a.m and 5 p.m. PST (12 noon and 8 p.m. EST) at 888-779-4968.
Why CL-Rated Cable?
While wiring requirements will depend on local building codes, CL3/FT4 cable is UL (fire) rated for residential and most commercial in-wall and in-ceiling applications. This is important because ordinary speaker wire, the kind you can get at just about any store, was never designed to run inside walls. If it catches fire, the outer layer shield could act like a fuse. Be safe and always check building code requirements.
Burying Outdoor Cable
Most folks will bury cable when running outdoor speakers in the yard. If you plan to bury the cable, we recommend you bury it 4-6” underground so that it's not visible or poses a danger of somebody tripping over it. We also recommend using CL3 rated outdoor speaker wire specifically designed for the outdoors. Jut like for in-wall speakers, this speaker cable can withstand extreme weather conditions like rain, snow and high temperatures and incorporates twice the insulation.
